RESUMO

There is an increasing concern about the presence of various types of pharmaceuticals in drinking water, as long-term exposure of people to even low concentrations of drugs can lead to many problems, such as endocrine disorders or drug resistance. As the removal in sewage treatment plants is not effective enough, as indicated, among others, by the EC and OECD reports, it is justified to search for new materials that will allow for an effective and rapid reduction of these pollutants in water. Therefore, in our work, catalytically active nanomaterials containing platinum group metals (PGMs) were synthesized from model and real multicomponent solutions and examined in reactions of organic compounds. The nanoparticles (NPs) were obtained from real solutions from the hydrometallurgical processing of spent automotive converters (SACs), and to the best of our knowledge, the novelty of the proposed paper is the application of solutions from SAC processing as precursors for PGM-NPs. The synthesized PGM-NPs were deposited on a support (TiO2), characterized and, finally, examined as nanocatalysts in a degradation reaction of ibuprofen (IB) from model aqueous solutions. The degree of IB degradation reached more than 90%. The main products of IB degradation were p-isobutylphenol and CO2.

RESUMO

Osteoporosis is the most common metabolic disease of the skeletal system and is characterized by impaired bone strength. This translates into an increased risk of low-energy fractures, which means fractures caused by disproportionate force. This disease is quite insidious, its presence is usually detected only at an advanced stage, where treatment with pharmaceuticals does not produce sufficient results. It is obligatory to replace the weakened bone with an implant. For this reason, it is necessary to look at the possibilities of surface modification used in tissue engineering, which, in combination with the drugs for osteoporosis, i.e., bisphosphonates, may constitute a new and effective method for preventing the deterioration of the osteoporotic state. To achieve this purpose, titanium implants coated with magnesium or zinc zeolite were prepared. Both the sorption and release profiles differed depending on the type of ion in the zeolite structure. The successful release of risedronate from the materials at a low level was proven. It can be concluded that the proposed solution will allow the preparation of endoprostheses for patients with bone diseases such as osteoporosis.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The dynamic development and change of rural lifestyle patterns towards urban patterns has been noticeable since the second half of the 20th century. Nutrition, as well as the lifestyle in urban and rural areas, has undergone a process of urbanization, which is evidenced by the following an increasing number of overweight people. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to compare eating habits and frequency of consumption of selected groups of products between the urban and rural residents from the Subcarpathian voivodeship. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The survey was carried out on a sample of 279 persons from urban and rural areas of Subcarpathian voivodeship. In this study, the diagnostic survey method consisting of 3 (different) parts was used. To check the significance of differences, U Mann-Whitney and Kruskal-Wallis tests were used; whereas correlations between variables were determined by the Spearman's rank of correlation coefficient and Pearson's chi-quadrat test. RESULTS: In the part concerning eating habits, statistically significant differences occurred among others; for the circumstances of eating meals, the most commonly consumed snacks, food processing techniques and the most frequently selected fat. In the part concerning the frequency of consumption of individual product groups, significant differences occurred among others; for dairy products, grain products, fast food, alcohol. There was a correlation between the frequency of consumption of individual products and socioeconomic status. CONCLUSIONS: The quality of the diet and eating habits of urban and rural residents of Subcarpathian voivodeship does not differ significantly. The detected differences in eating habits were more influenced by the education and socioeconomic status of the examined group than the place of residence.
